Takuya Kurihana – Department of Computer Science

I am a senior PhD student and a member of the Globus labs at the University of Chicago. I received my B.S. degree in Meteorology from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, but also studied computer science and applied mathematics. I studied abroad at UC Berkeley and Rice University, which motivated me to study in graduate school in the US. During my undergraduate, I worked for 2 years at the Meteorological Research Institute Japan Meteorological Agency as a part-time research assistant to research methodologies and application of data assimilation for weather forecasting technologies. Before starting my PhD, I interned at RIKEN Center for Computational Science for researching HPC and data assimilation algorithms.

I was born and grew up in Sukagawa City, Fukushima, Japan. I enjoyed swimming, running, and especially playing soccer at a competitive level. I still enjoy playing/watching many sports in my free time.

My research interests focus on the area of AI4Science; the application of deep learning, machine learning, high-performance computing, and large-scale data science. In particular, I have studied topics in self-supervised and physics-informed deep learning applications in a variety of natural science fields, including climate science, remote sensing, and bioinformatics.
