L. Ridgway Scott is professor emeritus at the University of Chicago. He was Professor of Computer Science and of Mathematics at the University of Chicago from 1998 to 2017, and the Louis Block Professor since 2001. He obtained the B. S. degree (Magna Cum Laude) from Tulane University in 1969 and the Ph. D. degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973.
Research
Focus Areas: Scientific Computing
My current interests focus on bioinformatics, via the Digital Biology Project, and the automatic generation of software to support scientific simulation, via the FEniCS project. The Digital Biology Project seeks to understand how protein systems function in a discrete fashion, especially in the presence of hydrophobic effects (which are very non-specific). FEniCS is a polymorhpic acronym for an international effort (www.fenics.org) that attempts to utilize mathematical structure inherent in scientific models to automate the generation of simulation software.
